A look around BBC TV Studio N, Manchester
Studio N, Broadcasting House, Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester was the television news studio for the BBC in the North West of England until it moved to Studio B in NBH, Oxford Road in 1981 - I took this clip one lunchtime shortly before the move. The cameras used are EMI 2001s and their zoom lens at its wide angle setting (50deg) makes the studio look larger than it really was. The clip is mute and recorded on the first portable VHS machine that JVC made by plugging one of the EMI 2001 cameras into its video-in socket.
The last programme from Studio N was Sports North West on Saturday 16th May 1981 (also on YouTube), and the last Look North West the day before (also on YT). Look North West then re-opened in Studio B, Oxford Rd, on the following Monday - 18th May 1981 (also on YT).

EMI 2001 Broadcast Camera - BBC TV Studio N, Manchester
BBC Studio N, Manchester was the North West of England's news studio in Piccadilly, Manchester until 1981 when it moved to NBH, Oxford Road, Manchester.
In May 1981 I decided to take my portable JVC VHS recorder in to the studio and record for posterity a few elements, and I'm glad I did. Here, at lunchtime when everyone was away I switched the lights on, panned a couple of them on to the subject (OK there is a camera shadow at one point), set the iris and black level for an average shot and let the video AGC of the recorder do the rest :)

The EMI 2001 cameras were not to be moved to the new Studio B in New Broadcasting House, Oxford Road, Manchester, but from what I remember sold on to either that great TV junk yard in Birmingham, or to Nigeria, which the BBC had a connection with, as noticed on courses at BBC Wood Norton Training Centre, Evesham, where a number of students were Nigerian.
This video gives a short tour of the EMI 2001 broadcast camera - the sound is mute. In the 70s there were three 2001s in this small studio, but shortly before the move there were four! 'Nationwide' was broadcast from this studio for a week, when it did a short tour of being broadcast from the regions one year - space was then very tight!
The head amplifiers of the four plumbicon tubes (red, green, blue and luminance) were the valve version using the E88CC valve. The zoom lens, which slots into the body of the camera i.e. doesn't hang off the front of it, is the usual 10:1 for this 625-line camera (there were 525-line NTSC versions used in the States), giving a maximum wide angle of 50 degrees. The cameras are mounted on Fulmer peds.
The EMI 2001 was first produced in 1966 and introduced into many BBC studios and OB units from 1968. Also several ITV companies purchased or leased the camera. The camera had the artifact of comet tails, produced where very bright lights were in the frame. Top of the Pops recordings are a good example of these.
The video was recorded on JVCs first portable VHS recorder, by plugging the output of the 2001 camera into the video-in socket. The picture quality on the VHS tape is much better than that shown on YouTube.

A rehearsal from BBC Studio N, Manchester for an insert into Nationwide on 1st May 1981 that I recorded on that day whilst working there. The subject was a boy who grew worms for fishing - a typical Nationwide item :)
Studio N at that time was the north west region's BBC News studio and items from here into Nationwide were common.
The audio is the female director in Studio N, i.e. prod.talkback. The man in the hot seat is Gerry Clarke, Floor Manager, and the cameraman with the hair, holding the worm, Keith Swadkins who moved from BBC Television Centre, London to Manchester in the 70s. The operator liking the colour of the cyclorama is Sound Supervisor Nigel Winchcombe. Ron Latham was the TM (Technical Manager) - the guy in charge of the lighting, the colour of the cyc and indeed in charge of the whole studio, a great guy. The cameras are EMI 2001.
The rehearsal was just for camera positions and lighting, and the boy would eventually be interviewed live from the Nationwide studio in London down the line that evening. The Nationwide studio was Studio E, Lime Grove, London. Then the cameras would be cut up locally as needed.

Starting with the national weather, then teasers from Nationwide, and then the beginning of the last txm of Look NorthWest from this studio in Broadcasting House, Piccadilly, Manchester - 15th May 1981. To move to Studio B, New Broadcasting House, Oxford Rd, Manchester the following Monday - 18th May 1981 (txm to be uploaded to YT soon!)
During the txm there was a 16 minute segment of the history of Broadcasting House (to be uploaded eventually to YT - unfortunately the segment was not well constructed and is rather boring to be honest).
The very final txm from Studio N was actually the following day - Sports NorthWest, presented by David Davies and John Mundy (also on YT). The last voice to be heard from Studio N and Broadcasting House, Manchester, was David Davies.
Broadcasting House was leased in the 1920s from a Bank, which was on the ground floor. It consisted of a number of radio studios, a newsroom, bar, canteen, Central Apparatus Room (CAR), Radio Manchester and TV Studios N and P. Also, up in the attic was a standby AM transmitter. There were also several bedrooms where staff could sleep overnight, ready for an early call to work, which I once took the opportunity of using.
The place was lavishly decorated with highly-polished brass, tiling, and a lift from a bygone era with concertina doors.

Here's a clip of the first rehearsal for a 7pm junction into BBC1 from BBC North West, Manchester, on 1st May 1981. On the night of the week when there was a thirty minute regional opt-out programme, and when Nationwide ended its transmission for that evening, just before 7pm, the regions used to transmit a junction, giving details of that particular night's programmes and the local opt-out for their area, tonight's being Home Ground.
The rehearsal is being squeezed inbetween the end of Look North West and an item live into Nationwide, about worms. It's rather fraught as the Production Assistant is missing from the gallery and time is tight. You'll hear the Nationwide director Nigel, who's in Studio E, Lime Grove, London, ask for the feed from Leeds, which is coming through the local desk.
The guy giving the information on the order of the sources and where VT is etc., is the TM (Technical Manager for the studio) Ron Lathom who wouldn't normally do this, but it seems that the young female director Jackie has been thrown in at the deep end.....
During the rehearsal we hear a countdown into VT and see a trailer that was pre-recorded in Studio A for the Home Ground regional opt-out programme with Brian Redhead - a great, interesting guy and very friendly with all staff. Both Studio A and VT are some two miles away in New Broadcasting House (Studio N being in Broadcasting House, Piccadilly, Manchester), and the video and audio are sent between the two.
At this point in time of the BBC, presenters didn't wear earpieces, so couldn't hear the Production Assistant's countdowns and cues and it was the FM (Floor Manager) who would cue the presenters by hand signals, as well as informing them of any changes. A couple of times you'll see the hand of Gerry Clarke the FM come into shot as he counts down and cues John Mundy the presenter - it was OK to see this in a rehearsal but obviously not on transmission.
Then after the rehearsal you'll see cameras and the director getting ready for the worms item into Nationwide.
However, in between the two the BBC world can be seen. This was located in a cupboard on the 4th floor of BH. The globe itself was about four inches high and had a monochrome camera pointing at it. The output was then colourised through a piece of equipment to produce the blue and yellow. However, the globe was made of plastic and the paint used for the oceans didn't stick very well. It was quite often that some of the paint flaked away to produce a new island mid-Atlantic/Pacific/Indian Ocean. So there was a regular painting session to fill in the flaked paint....
In this clip, my portable JVC VHS recorder has been connected to a wall point and the output of the selectable Vision Engineer's panel fed to it. So the engineer can select any source he likes and you'll not necessarily be seeing 'programme' all the time....
Apologies for the audio being left channel only.
